DIY Therapy Pool
Project Goal:
The goal of this project was to create an inexpensive, heated, saltwater, DIY therapy pool at home. This makes exercise more enjoyable and better for a busy lifestyle. At Pacific Sky Power, we are innovating methods to live a longer and more fulfilling life.
Water provides the best environment for exercise. Our therapy pool can be used to lose weight and stay in shape. Regular pool workouts increase flexibility and mobility which can decrease chronic pain and inflammation. Use the affiliate links and tips below at no cost to you and create your own DIY Therapy Pool.

Benefits of pool exercise:
1. Dynamic Resistance – low impact resistance against movement
2. Hydrostatic Pressure – helps with inflammation
3. Buoyancy – weightless environment reduces pressure on joints

Pool Exercises:

For the DIY therapy pool, tie off to an elevated attachment and run a line with a 12-inch bungee cord loop to the waist belt. This enables stationary exercise in the water. The 8 ft Intex pool is a little small for full swimming but you can effectively exercise your arm strokes and leg kicks independently. I normally do 3 sets of 5-minute arm strokes and 3 sets of 5-minute leg kicks. Then, I’ll finish off with 10 minutes of core exercises with my head resting on the inflatable pool rim and my arms bracing off the bottom of the pool.

Setup Tips for DIY Therapy Pool:

The Saltwater Pool Pump relieves the need for using harsh pool chemicals and keeps your pool water crystal clear. We set ours on the internal timer to chlorinate for 1 hr per day. This pump can also be used as a filter without chlorine production. Add about 20 lb of salt for the 8ft pool. The saltwater pool pump creates free chlorine from the salt.

The Electric Instant Water Heater works incredibly well. The Heater has three settings and we’ve been running ours for a few hours a day on low and medium to bring the water temp up to 75 or 80 degrees.

We recommend purchasing two of the same pools because we use the extra hoses and fitting in our DIY therapy pool  system. This also gives you back up components should something fail. Intex has done a great job with creating the pool pump saltwater system. This relieves the need for using harsh pool chemicals and keeps your pool water crystal clear. For the 8ft pool we set ours on the internal timer to chlorinate for 1 hr per day. This pump can also be used as a filter without chlorine production. Add about 20 lb of salt for the 8ft pool. The saltwater pool pump creates free chlorine from the salt. It’s important to note that when heating the pool, more chlorine is needed to keep the water clear. If the water starts to smell heavily of chlorine or plastic you may need more chlorine and the smell should disappear. Pool contaminants can also cause the pool to smell heavily of chlorine which can be fixed with more filter pumping and using the skimmer. Use test strips to check the water and you can also have your water tested by a local pool shop.

Before filling the pool connect all pool hoses and fittings using Lube Tube sealant. Intex pools come with two lower inlet ports for unfiltered water and one upper exit port for filtered water. Since the pump saltwater system uses 1’5 hoses, the 1.25” exit port on the 8ft Intex pool will need to be enlarged with a razor knife. First, use a permanent marker to mark the 1.5” hole on the pool liner and then slowly cut to the line with the razor. Now screw the hose end to the enlarged hole.

Install the two provided 1.25” hoses to the pool’s inlet ports and run them together with a T fitting. Run a 1.25” hose from the T fitting to a second T fitting. Run one 1.25” hose from the second T fitting to the smaller pool pump that come with the 8 ft Intex pool and the other 1.25” hose from the second T fitting to a 1.25″ to 1.5″ Hose Adapter. Connect the 1.5” hose from the pump saltwater system to the Hose Adapter. The hose adapter connection is tricky. Use plenty of Lube Tube sealant.

Now, going back to the smaller pool pump. The water flows out the upper hole. Remove the filter because it reduces flow speed to the water heater. Run a 1.25” pool hose to an unspecified adapter and a standard household flexible water hose to the water heater. We could not find an adapter for this so we cut off the end of the flexible water hose, stuck 6 inches inside the 1’25 hose, filled the opening with caulking and clamped it with a hose clamp after the caulk had dried. To finish pool setup, run the hot water flexible hose from the heater over the top of the pool and cut the end off.

You are now ready to fill the DIY therapy pool .  Follow all instruction and watch YouTube instructional videos. Once the pool is filled make sure to bleed the air from both pumps before starting them. We’re planning to use our pool through the winter so we have begun planning for insulating the pool and the tent. Since inside the tent will stay relatively warm, we may grow some lettuce and herbs.

The Electric Instant Water Heater is amazing, but it is designed for hard wire to a circuit board.  We wired ours with a 10-gauge extension cord, but we do recommend finding a qualified electrician to help with this.

We have started insulating the pool and the tent. By adding UV lights and a space heater we are planning to grow lettuce and keep the DIY therapy pool going all winter. Subscribe to our youtube channel and our facebook page to stay posted on this and other projects at YouTube and Facebook
